Is therapy right for me?
Of course, seeking out therapy is an individual choice. There are many reasons why people come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing psychological issues, or problems with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in one's life such as a divorce or work transition. Many seek the advice of a counselor as they pursue their own personal exploration and growth. Working with a therapist can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges. Therapy can help address many types of issues including depression, anxiety, conflict, grief, stress management, body-image issues, and general life transitions. Do I really need therapy? I can usually handle my problems.

There may be times when you are asked to take certain actions outside of the therapy sessions, such as reading a relevant book or keeping records to track certain behaviors. It is important process what has been discussed and integrate it into your life between sessions. For therapy to be most effective you must be an active participant, both during and between the sessions. People seeking psychotherapy are willing to take responsibility for their actions, work towards self-change and create greater awareness in their lives. Participation in therapy can result in a number of benefits to you, including improving interpersonal relationships and resolution of the specific concerns that led you to seek therapy. Working toward these benefits; however, requires effort on your part. During evaluation or therapy, remembering or talking about unpleasant events, feelings, or thoughts can result in you experiencing considerable discomfort or strong feelings of anger, sadness, worry, fear, etc. or experiencing anxiety, depression, insomnia, etc. In the process of therapy you may feel challenged with respect to some of your assumptions or perceptions as we examine different ways of looking at, thinking about, or handling situations which can cause you to feel very upset, angry, depressed, or disappointed. Attempting to resolve issues that brought you to therapy in the first place, such as personal or interpersonal relationships may result in changes that were not originally intended. Psychotherapy may result in decisions about changing behaviors, employment, substance use, schooling, housing or relationships. Sometimes a decision that is positive for one family member is viewed quite negatively by another family member. Change will sometimes be easy and swift, but more often it will be slow and even frustrating. There is, of course, no guarantee that psychotherapy will always yield positive or intended results.
Is medication a substitute for therapy?
In some cases a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action. It's very common for the therapist to work in concert with a medical doctor in order to create the most effective treatment plan possible. It is well established that the long-term solution to mental and emotional problems and the pain they cause cannot be solved solely by medication. Instead of simply treating the symptom, therapy addresses the cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that inhibit our progress. For some issues the best way to achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being involves a combination of "talk therapy" and medication. We will expore together the issues you're confronting and develop a plan for success.

I will provide a billing invoice that in many cases you can use for reimbursement from your insurance company
Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client.
However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. Exceptions include:
- Suspected child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
